 Community Eyes Movement in Naming a New Developer for South Works Site

Chicago– After more than two decades of sitting vacant, the former U.S. Steel South Works site finally has a new developer. Barcelona Housing Systems has been named as the new developer for the South Works.

“The Coalition is happy that a decision has been made regarding the developer of the South Works site.  We look forward to meeting with Barcelona Housing Systems and collaborating with them on the success of the development.” –Amalia NietoGomez, coordinator of the Coalition for a Lakeside CBA and Executive Director of the Alliance of the SouthEast (ASE).

“We’re looking forward to working with our local public officials and the site developer in establishing a transparent, win-win relationship to benefit the current community residents, congregations, and businesses.” –Anne Holcomb, South Shore community activist.

The new development will have a mix of retail, residential, and a manufacturing plant for pre-fabricated housing. According to the BHS’s website, the project will include 12,000 homes, and will be broken into 4 phases of implementation. The development will have green spaces, renewable energies, common social areas, and urban vegetable gardens.

The Coalition for a Lakeside CBA would like a commitment to co-facilitate a public meeting in the 7th Ward with the final bidder of the South Works site. The Coalition would like to work together with Alderman Mitchell in order to ensure that the families who built this community can stay in this community and have access to:

  • Educational resources
  • Job training employment programs that prioritize the hiring of local residents
  • Affordable housing available to local residents
  • Environmental protections

The Comptroller is the chief fiscal officer who oversees the budget and monitors the efficiency, transparency, and accountability of all finances for the state.
